Having a large waist circumference can lead to the onset of many lifestyle related diseases regardless of the BMI (Body Mass Index). The Body Mass Index is not a very accurate measurement of obesity. BMI does not discriminate lean mass from fat mass or abdominal fat, both of which have different health implications. Abdominal fat is easily broken down into fatty acids, which flow directly into the liver and into muscle; they lead to an increase in the production of LDL 'bad' cholesterol and triglycerides. Insulin also becomes less effective in controlling blood sugar, so insulin resistance sets in. Visceral fat can cause metabolic disturbances, and in women it causes an increased risk of breast cancer.
Apple or pear?
Depending on the fat accumulation there are two body shapes. When the fat is accumulated in the lower body, this is the pear shape and the fat is subcutaneous. Fat in the abdominal area is visceral and gives rise to the apple shape. The fat deposition is affected by one's heredity and hormones.
Visceral fat reduces more easily with regular exercise and healthy diet. But the subcutaneous fat in the abdomen is generally harder to lose and takes longer. This is dangerous as it is situated near the portal vein. This vein carries blood from the intestinal area to the liver. Free fatty acids from this fat enter the liver and affect the blood lipids, increasing bad cholesterol and lowering good cholesterol
It is very important to maintain a healthy diet and have a regular exercise regime to keep healthy. 45- 60 minutes a day of exercise, done regularly will keep unhealthy fat accumulation away... Choose an activity that you enjoy and that you can do on a regular basis, where you will burn calories. If it's not enjoyable, you won't maintain it. And unless you persist at it, it won't help you lose weight.
